Do you use the Rec Centres?
- Weekly to play bridge. A friend drives me
- Silver Threads Memory Plus at St. Luke’s. Previously at Orchard House
- Gordon Head pool for waterfit. Low impact. Senior instructor. Private change rooms. Centre has endless exercise equipment. Like the social interaction. Drives to centre
- Use all 4 rec centres in the evening when quiet. Zumba gold and the weight room
- No cost for rec centre programs when over age 90
- Like the noodles at Gordon Head pool. Can sit on them.
Do you use Saanich Parks and trails?
- Use the parks for boot camps
- Weekly walking groups at parks would be good
- Like the Cedar Hill chip trail. It is shaded. Enjoy watching the ducks and picking blackberries. Snack bar at the Cedar Hill golf course.
- Need more park benches. Benches should be higher and have arms
- Parks and trails should be walker friendly, have more washrooms, and water fountains.
- Terrain of trails important. Gravel causes too much vibration for walkers. Signage should include info re trail surfaces. Boardwalks are good.
- Mt. Doug outstanding. Could have better signage.
- Size of font on signage could be larger. Pictorial signage would be helpful for ESL. Signage should not contain too much information.
- Interpretive panels on trails
- Fitness equipment in parks. Use existing playgrounds and include equipment for adults. Musical instruments in parks.
- Feel safe in the parks
What stops you from using Rec Centres?
- Transportation. Bus to Cedar Hill Rec is only once an hour.
- Walk a lot. Like music, flowers, choir
- Walk the Galloping Goose and Dallas Road
- Try to walk every day
- Busy with family, church, and playing bridge
- Won’t go out by myself. Go to Beacon Hill Park with friends.
- Too hilly where I live
- Afraid of falls
- Never been in gym but would like to go
- No need as programs offered where I live. Tuesday exercise, Wed. yoga and Friday exercise.
How can Saanich Parks and Rec encourage you to use their centres, parks and trails?
- Info on programs hard to find in Active Living Guide.
- Levels needed for program descriptions. User needs to know level of fitness required. Functional description of program better than age category
- Computer lesson
- Programs at residence would be good –although, in one of the settings they encourage residents to go out of building
- Education on what is happening. People don’t have any idea of what is going on.
- More outreach from Saanich to Housing Centres – maybe have peer ambassadors go to the housing setting to inform about programs being offered
- Monthly newsletter
- Info needs to be at residences
- Promotional days. Get to know your rec centre
- Speakers to visit residences to share info. Could be the instructors
- One free trial introduction
- Day camp for seniors
- Just give us a ride
- Have more information about which parks are accessible and where the entrances are located
- For walking – have a track that is flat and easily accessed for seniors to walk around and meet
