Four participants: one recently retired, one representative from Arthritis Society, and two older adults
What activities are you currently participating in, and are there any programs you would like to see in the future?
- Aquafit a couple times a week ; sometimes kids can be a problem in the pool – loud
and jump in front of you while you are trying to exercise in river pool. Could there be a
time in the pool just for adults, no tots or preschoolers, with no music?
-Osteofit – excellent teacher and is very good to give alternatives for exercises
- Age designation isn’t relevant; activity level and fitness is You want to feel comfortable
doing the class. Instructor must recognize different abilities and ask the each person
“do you have any limitations?” This can only be done in small classes
IDEA: in the Active Living Guide: add to pages “Please check with instructor and staff for info on programs suiting your ability” (icons?)
- Would like to go on bus trips, if they are affordable, most too expensive
- Would like discussion groups – need new ideas, mental and cognitive stimulation
- Please open Cedar Hill Golf Course restaurant again!
Social
- Group met for coffee after fitness class however it was hard to get invited to the coffee,
had to offer help in order to get invited
- Hard to make friends when you are new to the community
- Social Cooking for Seniors – Thinks it is a great social program and gets you out
learning something
IDEA: Offer an Open House once a month for 55+ to meet others and hear about programs
Financial:
Social Cooking for Seniors - can just afford it, but not if price increases.
A lot of programs are financially unaffordable. LIFE program is too low for two people so they don’t qualify. Currently not attending aquafit as pass has run out and have to save up to buy another pass.
Volunteer/Mentorship opportunities
-tried to offer knitting course for teens but was told it was offered at Commonwealth and
wouldn’t offer another, was quite disappointed
IDEA: Could rec centre recruit retired seniors to volunteer teach “Seniors only” programs?
IDEA: Could volunteer hours be put toward a credit for a pass instead of receiving individual passes
Transportation:
#8 and #24 only run once an hour and long walk from street
Where does the Community Bus run, where do you find out about it? How do they set the schedule? Would like to have input.
IDEA Could BC Transit work with Rec Centres to adjust schedules?
Parking can be a problem at Gordon Head. In the morning kids from school park in lot. It can be a long walk from gravel parking lot. Maybe centre could phone school and let them know parking is for rec centre patrons.
