- Pre-meeting for Focus Group in September
- 7 Female residents, some with mobility challenges, some with cognitive challenges, between the ages of 40-75 years.
- This was an introductory meeting, formal Focus Group will be set up in September Most were not very familiar with Saanich Parks & Recreation facilities, programs and services.
- What kind of activities do you participate in either at Battin Fielding or in Saanich?
- -taken part in a Trust Us Project with Saanich in previous years, and enjoyed getting to know some teens
- - like to garden but seems to be getting overgrown
- - Mary’s Tea in the activity room
- - Club House holds Community Kitchens
- What kinds of things would interest you or encourage you to participate?
- - Community Gardens
- - Would like to do more things on site as I have mobility issues
- - Sewing instruction – we could bring our sewing machines down
- - Women’s conversation group – just to get together to chat
- - Group walks with scooter, on the Galloping Goose
- - Self defense class for people in scooters
- - Socializing with family gets you out, don’t usually go out on my own
- - Les Passmore has a Monday program for people who don’t go out too much
- What could Saanich Parks & Recreation improve to encourage participation?
- - Trails could use more signage, don’t know what side to be on in a scooter
- - Bike etiquette, some bikes pass and go too fast
- - A lot of trails can’t get scooters on them
- - It would be nice to have areas to stop and talk on trails
- - Park maps – with clear trail connectors
- - projects like Trust Me
- - trips to farms
- - a farm market at Uptown
- Where do you look for information on programs, or hear about activities?
- - Through Tricia – Community Development Coordinator BC Housing
- - Bulletin Board in lobby
- - Book Club
- Participants were very familiar with Uptown Mall and had more input in that area
- - needs to be more visible, looks like a giant cement boat
- - can’t see what is in there
- - no community seating, just restaurant seating
- - more high end stores than before
- - elevator is really slow, and broken
- - need crosswalk between Saanich Rd & Ravine way, a pedestrian controlled crossing or overpass
- - need more essential services in there
