Started out with concerns around getting into a full class – Yoga Chair and the possibility of adding a Sunday class. Regular participants could not get in.
IDEA: could previous participants have first right to registration before opening it to public? (Need more Chair Yoga classes)
-Older seniors who cannot participate anymore become isolated.
What are the best times and days for classes?
- Daytimes, not too early around 10 or 11.
- Some like very early morning classes.
- Weekend okay, days and times don’t really matter when you’re retired.
- Sunday afternoons would be good
How do you feel about safe places to walk?
- Lynn Valley has good signage
- Signage so important, find Mt Doug to have very poor signage.
- Not enough signage in most parks.
- Swan Lake – needs more no smoking, dogs must be on leash and no biking on trail
signage.
- Dogs not being on leash a safety concern in many parks in Saanich.
- Galloping Goose a very nice trail but you must always be aware of cyclists or you’d get
run down.
- Noticed many motorized vehicles on the Lochside trail.
What kinds of activities do you participate in other than aquafit?
- Walking group on Thursday, but some participants go too fast, ahead of leader
- level of ability is better than age
- Silver Threads – Les Passmore Centre
- Goward House.
What makes you want to come to a centre? What makes a centre welcoming?
- Staff/ the people – especially front desk
- The people in the classes
- Location.
- More of a community feel.
- Gordon Head is a friendly place, SCP too big.
- Encourages community.
- SCP pool deck very slippery, feels too big
- Welcoming feel, we make an effort to welcome new people to our programs.
- Luncheons at Gordon Head are great! Although the lobby is very small for the number
of people. What about using another room?
What is missing for seniors?
- Gordon Head requires a larger social space and/or coffee area.
- Womens changeroom at Gordon Head too small, especially when buggies and
children running around
- Not enough pickleball time and space.
- Croquet very popular and hard to get in. (need more classes)
- Parking at Gordon Head very busy especially Tuesday mornings.
- Why do the rec centres not have specific older adult programmers?
- Specific older adult areas.
-IDEA: Is there access to the teen centre at Gordon Head during the day?
-IDEA: Can there be computer stations placed in the lobby at Gordon Head?
- Would like to see more a Community Centre – and a person who works with seniors
- would be good to have someone who focuses on seniors programs
- Juan de Fuca is great – all in one central place
- At other (seniors) centres you pay one fee per year and programs are cheaper
- Need a Seniors Directory
Where do you look for information?
-Online.
-ALG.
-Not so much newspaper and radio.
At what age do you consider yourself and older adult?
-65
-When I stopped working.
-Age is only a number
What kind of barriers are there in taking part in programs and services?
- Can there be a better ladder into the Gordon Head pool, or underwater ramp?
- Transportation, bus routes in Saanich very poor.
- Poverty, some not having the means to take part.
- Disabilities.
- Find pool access easier at Commonwealth than Gordon Head.
- Once they stop driving that is usually the point where isolation starts to set in.
- Not enough info is shared with the public about the happenings within the centre.
IDEA: could there be a Saanich Parks & Rec bulletin board?
General comments
- Preferred registration for past participants.
- Can full programs be moved to larger spaces.
- Srs directory, where is it and why is it not in the rec centres?
- Programs should have clear levels of ability.
- Give more options on times, abilities.
- Programs should be broken down by levels and not ages. Mild/medium/difficult.
- Can instructors be changed once in a while. Some have been teaching for years and
have become quite stale. A way to change things up.
- There should be levels for the Walk and Talk program as not all seniors can keep up
or last for longer walks.
- Cordova Bay Hiking Group is too difficult for some older adults.
- Level of ability more important than age of participants.
- Have options for both lower and higher level participants.
