Are you familiar with the programs Saanich offers/what do you already participate in?
- Use Galloping Goose (CRD trail)
- Waterfit – but currently use Crystal Pool because it’s easier to get there by bus.
- Line Dancing at Gordon Head
- Gordon Head exercise program
- Pulling Together volunteer
- One member organizes out trips for the house. Eg: Tea for Tutus (ballet), Beacon Hill Park. Free programs.
- Group would enjoy chair exercise or music appreciation brought to them at the house. Abbeyfield is run by volunteers, so there isn’t internal programming. Used to have chair exercises.
- Bridge and Music
- Program info for Yakimovich Centre is mailed to the house and posted on the bulletin board. Sometimes the program information is read aloud to the group.
- Saanich has too many parks. Waste of money that could be re-directed to more important places.
- Enjoy sing-a-longs. Brings life into the room.
- Group watches movies on Netflix.
- The house has a game room with puzzles, a shared computer, games (scrabble), books.
- Would like to do chair yoga. Perhaps have volunteer teachers or follow video instruction.
Barriers to Participation
- Walking is dangerous, because of uneven sidewalks in poor condition. Tree roots make sidewalks treacherous.
- Sidewalks and connectors.
- Concerns about crosswalks and assistance/sounds at crosswalks for the visually impaired close to Abbeyfield.
- Sidewalks are dangerous for scooters. Quadra st. specifically.
- Yearly bus pass for a person with low income is $45 – getting expensive
- Bicycles go too fast on Galloping Goose. It’s scary, because they are quiet and you don’t know they are there.
- Transportation.
- Affordability X 5
- Handidart: a 40 min ballet could be a four hour outing.
- Is there a “community bus” with BC Transit?
- Good bus service, except when youth are in school and residents have to wait for 2 or 3 buses to pass.
- To get to Cordova Bay, you have to transfer. Trip takes hours.
- Volunteers come and take residents to appointments. Organized through Saanich Volunteer Services.
Where would you look for information on programs?
- Some residents have computers and look online.
- Look in community papers (Saanich News, Times Colonist) to get ideas.
- Bulletin board in house for posting info.
- Unfamiliar with Active Living Guide. Dropping it off would help.
- Unfamiliar with LIFE program.
