Discussion:
Background of the Older Adults Strategy and the current progress was shared. This was an information gathering session and a chance to meet each other.
Songhees will be starting a Health Strategy at the end of September. The project will take about a year – just in the very beginning phase.
The Wellness Centre has an Elders Centre which is run by the Elders and is available to older adults any time. *An Elder is not necessarily a “senior” or “older adult” – but a person who has been designated an elder because they have earned the respect of the community through their presence at events, principles, values and teachings.
Wellness Centre offers older adults fitness class and has a fitness center which is also open to the public.
Opportunities to work together in the future? – depends on a relationship and whether there is a need or interest. More may be known after completion of the Songhees Health Strategy.
We have heard that many older adults would like educational courses, discussion groups and lectures.
Q Is there a possible exchange for First Nation adults to come and give lectures on their history and culture, possibly vice versa?
