What is working well in Saanich Recreation Centres? - Location of centres, lucky to be able to use any recreation centre across the city
- Cedar Hill Golf course is great, and is in great condition, we like the Nine & Dine but wish it was offered more often
- Accessibility is good for visually impaired, come by Handydart and meet friends here
- Come here for fitness and for social
- Lived in Gordon Head area for many years – taken swimming, weights, fitness
- Music In The Park is a good use of parks
- Bike trails are fantastic
- Parks are great
- Floor in auditorium is good
- Some of us have hip replacements and need to keep active, We can do more at GH than at home
- Cedar Hill has a beautiful arts centre
- Taken language classes in past, getting a good teacher makes all the difference and J Carlos is fantastic
- Prices are reasonable, good value for one pass for all the centre activities
- Enjoy volunteering at Music In The Park
What would be the ideal scenario for Parks & Recreation in the future?- More room in the women’s changerooms – need more space between benches and lockers, gets very crowded after classes (look at staggered scheduling)
- Would like a nice social area, café X 6
- Some rooms at Gordon Head are too small for the size of the classes (ie auditorium is too small for our fitness class)
- Renovate Red Barn in to a gymnasium
- A real gymnasium is needed
- Beginner computer classes “Gentle classes” J After Christmas offer “How to use your iPad”
- Would like Ukele classes
- Full day workshops are not a good idea for seniors – too long and tiring (took How To Use Your Camera full day)
- Have classes with more specific levels instead of having a class with varying levels of abilities in one program – need to be shorter & more specific
- Would like classes on how to use Nordic Poles – have them at home X 2
- Offer a lot of gentle classes but still challenging – as you get older you still want to participate and challenge yourself but need to have options for gentler classes, or ways to modify
- Should target Baby Boomers so they get into the habit of exercising early and stay fit
- Pickleball: In Oak Bay a group of 24 pickleballers got together and rented outdoor courts twice a week (10-noon) for the whole summer. They paid $60 each and Oak Bay provided a metal supply box on the court with a code. They manage themselves. It was set up very quickly and easily when they asked. – would be great to do in Saanich. McMinn could use more pickleball courts – lots of room in the field.
- - would like more beginner classes for Pickleball. Ian is great but Pearkes is not very friendly for beginners
- Parks – need more benches and water along trails, and washrooms
- Parks – have washrooms open! Why are the always locked?
- Transportation
- Location is very important as we age,
- Take Handidart and use tax saver
- Transportation can be a barrier
- What other barriers are there?
- Mobility, physical limitations become harder
- Physical health
- Income for pensioners, some people don’t have the money
-
