Summary of what people told us... |
Seniors Drop In
Saanich Commonwealth Place
May 26th, 2016
A Multicultural Group which meets regularly in the Teen Centre, once a week.
Think back to your most positive, memorable experience you had related to parks, recreation and community. What do you think made this experience so memorable?
- I always enjoyed competition, it is fun
- I participated in iPal and thought it was very successful, coaching soccer reminded me of playing years ago. The children were respectful, and decreased fighting with seniors around. Great to have the physical interaction with children
- The camaraderie keeps us coming back
- Playfair park is one of the nicest parks, beautiful flowers
What is important to you regarding getting out and participating in activities?
- Make sure everybody has the chance to be active and on their feet and stay healthy
- Open, easy to understand reception area, with smiling staff
- Open desk / reception area at entrance to CC with friendly staff who look at you and welcome you, asking if they may be of help
- Social, gathering spaces like Oak Bay & Juan de Fuca, provide a chance to interact with other people
- Conversation with each others
- Have a place for dogs (fenced) at Community Centres
- Reasonable costs
- Busses that take people on out trips
-In our culture (home country) we used to live with family when we got older, now here we are on our own, can't find affordable housing and by myself. We could look after the children and we still have a lot to offer.
- We enjoy:
Playing games: Table Tennis X 7
Pickle Ball
Play with others – 1:1, 2:2, in a group
Walking together – with a dog, in pairs or a group
Having “FUN’ / friendly competition
Play Chess / Mah Gong
Interesting Talks
Ballroom Dancing
Darts and Scrabble
What else would encourage you to attend programs? What’s missing?
- More table tennis 3-4 times a week
- Commonwealth P{lace Seniors Drop In – have it available 5 times a week – just like
this one – no fee or $2.00 – no more
- Designated space more than once a week
- Chinese Dancing / Mah Jong
- Centres closer to bus drop off/routes / Parking for cars
- Affordable transportation (cost of buses too high for some with no more transfers)
- Cafeteria with reasonable food available = A social gathering place
- Woodworking (carving) and Computer classes
- Discussions about Finance / How to deal with Shysters
- Seniors have a lot of experience and knowledge to give, could be mentors - (possible mentorship program?)
- Mentorship Programs like IPAL
- Intergenerational Programs where seniors interact and engage with children / young people in physical and social interaction (games and conversation) – Intergenerational contact is important
- User of volunteers to support Rec. Centre community programs - HIGHLY EFFECTIVE – expand program
- Buses that take older adults on Field Trips
- Pool table, Chess, food
- Need instructors who can see what participants can do
